Located 18 miles north of Chicago, Central Street is home to Evanston Hospital, with 3,500 employees, and Northwestern University's athletic facilities. On fall weekends, the street turns purple as thousands of Wildcat fans flock to football games at Ryan Field. Despite its proximity to the university, Central Street is distinctive and unique. It is not just another campus town area.

Accessible to walkers and bicyclists; widened sidewalks, mature trees and picturesque storefronts welcome those on foot; dedicated bike lanes enhance travel for those on bicycles.

Through an overarching collaborative strategy that brings APA members together with members of the American Public Health Association (APHA), Plan4Health builds local capacity to address health goals using planning strategies. Coalitions made up of APA chapters, APHA affiliate groups, and others are working to set a new paradigm for healthy planning and address tough problems by leveraging complementary expertise and influence.

This new resource offers howto guidance on integrating health into policies and regulations that help shape the built environment. It is available for free thanks to support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Based on the successes and lessons learned from Plan4Health, the Planning and Community Health Center has established a new initiative to build the capacity of APA chapters to make health a chapter priority.

This year's theme Innovation in Planning underscores the important role planning plays in addressing and adapting to challenges faced by communities in the 21st century. Innovation is everything from using data sources and technology to address issues including inequality, access to transportation, and social mobility to celebrating new approaches to creating communities of lasting value.

The achievements of planning are celebrated in October with National Community Planning Month. The annual observation kicks off with the announcement of APA's Great Places in America.

October is National Community Planning Month, a time to recognize the achievements of planning. And to kickoff the month, APA announces its 2017 Great Places in America designees. The Great Places in America program, celebrating its 10th year, celebrates places of exemplary character, quality and planning. You can also nominate your favorite public space, street or neighborhood for the "People's Choice" designation.

The CPAT program was relaunched in 2011 and has grown significantly since that time. The practice of providing pro bono technical assistance to communities is not new to APA, however, with volunteer teams dating back to 1995.

This CAP Training Webinar is intended for professional planners, community organizers, and citizens interested in community planning. AICP members will gain a more nuanced set of skills related to organizing and participating in community workshops and other public engagement strategies (and earn 1 CM credit). Viewers will also learn effective ways of participating in public forums by developing new ways of eliciting input and important feedback from residents and stakeholders.

The Planning and the Black Community Division provides a forum for planners, administrators, public officials, students, and other interested individuals to address issues of significance to the black community. An annual twoday retreat seeks to enlist maximum participation in determining division policy issues. The division newsletter publishes articles on economic development, housing, transportation, career opportunities, and division activities. Divisionsponsored sessions at the National Planning Conference have included international themes and speakers.

As powerful forces in many locations, PBCD members are well suited to exhibit leadership in tackling the pressing social and economic challenges in our communities. Now is the time for planners to engage in major new national initiatives that harness the potential for development and regeneration.

In addition to publishing semiannual newsletters, and monthly eblasts, the division sponsors sessions and workshops at national, regional, and state conferences, as well as webinars. We also maintain a permanent national position through the Housing Track at the APA annual conference. We support the Outstanding Planning Student Organization awards program recognizing outstanding work by up and coming planners. We also assist APA with their Policy and Advocacy function by bringing experts in the housing and community development field to help shape policy on the national and local levels.

During the project period, Plan4Health Tarrant County built on existing efforts and improved access to local, fresh food in Southeast Fort Worth through partnerships, new initiatives and incorporating a public health perspective into planning efforts.

The new guide "Growing Local" showcases ways that communities can strengthen their food systems through planning, policy, and public investment.

The New Mexico Planners4Health project leveraged Story Maps to share assessment findings and data analysis.

Local residents and APA leaders celebrated the designation of Downtown Santa Ana as a Great Place in America.

This story map focuses on the many events celebrating excellent community planning throughout October.

The final project meeting during the 2017 Policy and Advocacy Conference provided a preview of what the 28 chapters have accomplished. From the interactive Story Maps of New Mexico to the working groups of Pennsylvania, chapters across the country are identifying strategies to integrate planning and public health in their communities.

Plan4Health was a completely new type of project for APA and an exciting opportunity to go beyond simply encouraging our members to think about health by actually providing financial support for them to partner with peers from multiple sectors to implement change.

In September 2014, APAs Planning and Community Health Center was awarded a threeyear grant from the Center for Disease Control and Preventions (CDC) Division of Community Health, launching a major new project: Plan4Health.
